Hey there! Koko, Japanese Illustrator Mom.
So you want to doodle, but you are a total newbie and need some guidelines.
I am so happy you are here!
In this post I am giving you some advice of “How to Doodles” – from many different aspects.
I hope you will get inspired after reading and more clear about Doodling.
Tools I use for Doodles
Tools Doodles… ha, so here are my tools when I draw doodles.
Pencil – I use this Pentel Mechanical Pencil. 0.7mm thickness. It’s pretty solid, very smooth drawing feeling. I really like it that grip part is rubber so my fingers don’t slip.
I like it very much!
Eraser. THE BEST eraser in the world. MONO.
Once you use it, you can’t go any other erasers. With all my heart, please, please try it. You will love it.
I’ve been a MONO eraser user for 30+years. (basically, since I was in elementary school. )
TOMBOW your eraser is GOLD.
Drawing Software – CLIP STUDIO PAINT.
After drawing draft on paper, I bring it to computer and finalize it.
Clip Studio, is one of the cheapest and best drawing software. It has came out for iPad, so you can draw like drawing on a tablet. I use Microsoft Surface / touch pen for digital drawing.
Ok! Now, let’s move on to Doodle Tips!
How to Doodle Tip 1.
Relax and Enjoy!
No Stress. Doodles are for relaxing your minds so don’t worry about making mistakes or drawing not as good – it’s the most important that you have fun!
How to Doodle Tip 2
Try to go classic – use pencil, eraser, paper.
It’s funny, I’ve been working with computer for over +15 years, but I am a huge pencil and paper believer. They give you a lot of nice flexibilities, and it’s just not the same feeling from computer drawing.
Pencils are great because simply you can erase it!!!!
This is the biggest benefit of using a pencil, it’s nice that you don’t have to think of making mistakes.
When I have illustration job, no matter what, I always start with pencil paper sketching. (I never draw directly with pens, or computer.)
Somehow I feel like I can draw better with pencil, than computer. I think it’s the “touching” feeling of paper, and how I can control better with pencil. (angle, strength etc etc.)
How to Doodle Tip 3.
Find images for inspirations.
Even though you decide that you want to doodle, it’s not easy to “ok, sit down, and just start doodling”.
You need some kind of inspirations – go check Instagram, Google image search, Pinterest. Magazines have beautiful pictures, too!
Get some images that you can refer to.
When you draw, always have it next to you as you draw.
How to Doodle Tip 4.
Some objects look very complicated. But, ALL the objects start from simple lines.
For instance, my Winter Doodle post has how-to-draw Snowflake.
Snowflakes – usually its finished drawing looks complicated, right?
But, it starts as this – check this out.
and ends like this.👇😮👇
Don’t think too complicated! 😀 All the shapes always have a beginning.
You need to figure out where / how to begin.
Start with simple 1 line.
You don’t have to copy object perfectly, modify it
How to Doodle Tip 5.
Add some spice
You have so much freedom when you doodle. There is no limit what you can draw.
How about adding some tasteful elements to your doodles?
- Color it
- Add shading
- Add background
- Add speech bubble , let it speak! (It’s very fun to give “life” to your doodles ☺️)
This image below is from my Winter Doodles, I’ve colored it with Clip Studio.
This is a normal black and white version,
This is how I colored! Huge difference, right?
If you have time let’s continue to decorate your doodles 😉
How to Doodle Tip 6.
Draw what your mind speaks.
Earlier I was talking about referring a picture when you draw, but once you’re used to it … use imagination and draw!
How to Doodle Tip 7.
Say you are using a pen to doodle and made a mistake.
No problem, this is actually one of the best part of doodling – how to cover your mistake!
Let me show you my example. I was doodling a rabbit.
Something was wrong with his face shape and ears….
What did I to?
I added some decoration! 😄 I started drawing flowers around him. They look ok, I think?
If you are drawing with a pen, can’t erase, keep drawing something over it. Usually flower, or abstract patterns will do 👌 It’s okay!
How to Doodle Tip 8.
Trace it with marker pen. Finish up clean
If you draw with pencil, I suggest to trace it with a marker to finish it up. This will also give you a chance to make correction.
Your doodles will become clean looking with strong lines.
So, that’s about it!
I hope my advice helped you and motivated to draw 🙂
