Hey you! Illustrator Mom, Koko here!
Today we’re going to draw a cute, kawaii Butterfly!
I’ve made a practice sheet for this drawing tutorial. It’s grayed out, so you (kids) can trace the line to practice.
Here is a sample below…

Let’s Draw! Step by Step Drawing Tutorial
Final Pic. This is what you’re going to draw! 😁
Step 1. Attention! Our butterfly has a beautiful, big wings on both side, so make sure you have enough space on the paper.
Draw a slightly small-ish hat first, in the middle of the paper.
Step 2. Our butterfly has a head and a body 🙂 so we’re drawing his face here.
Step 3. Why not give a happy face? Draw 2 round eyes, and smiley mouth 🙂
Step 4. This can be a bit tricky to draw. We’re drawing antennas.
Start from a long wavy antenna part, draw from top to the bottom. And, add a ball at the end of antenna.
Step 5. Repeat the same for the other antenna. NOTE! it looks good if this antenne is a bit tilted, so it looks more natural.
Step 6. Now on to Butterfly’s body! It’s a simply body shape, like this. 🙂
Step 7. Add two arms on both sides. They will look cute if they are a bit short and thick, rather than thin long.
Step 8. Same as legs. Adding round, thick and short legs..
Step 9. NOW! From here we’re going to draw Butterfly’s wings! These steps are important, so take a good look – don’t worry, I give you detailed instructions!
Are you ready?
First, we will start from left wing. (looking from you)
Give a slightly curvy long line.
Step 10. Then draw another curvy – this time a bit shorter line – it’s almost like you’re drawing a flower… a bit thick, fat petal!
The wing will look nice balanced and cute, if this top part looks like a bit thick petal- in my opinion.
Step 11. Adding a small accent, like “V” line.
Step 12. We’re finishing his wing by drawing another “petal” – this time, a bit sharper.
Step 13. Now, we’re drawing a nice patterns inside of the Butterfly.
Basically follow the outside the line – drawing 1 line inside.
Step 14. Connecting it with another line.
Step 15. Next, adding a small pattern. Draw a slightly curved line, and connect with another line.
Step 16. – and this is the last pattern! Skinny oval-looking pattern.
Step 17. We’re going to draw the same wing on your right side.
Step 18. It doesn’t have to be exactly the same size,
but we want to give the same shape of the wing at least.
Step 19. adding a small accent
Step 20. – and finishing the outline of the wing !
Step 21. Adding the same patterns as other wing..
Step 22. And lastly …. let’s add some “tails” at the end! Give nice long lines that curls at the end!
Well done!!!! There were many steps this time, but I hope you could follow! If it was difficult, watch my VIDEO tutorial and print out the practice sheet. Practice more, I am sure you will be better at it!
This is it! I hope you enjoy this tutorial 🙂
