How to draw a Japanese anime boy
Step 1. First, I start with drawing a face line.
At this point I don’t really have a clear idea what to draw… only vaguely. But I kinda knew, that I wanted to draw a nice, friendly, kind Japanese boy.
After face, I draw a nose. Nose keeps a good balance of a face for me, I may change later, but I just draw so that I can develop this drawing further.
Step 2. Hair.
I like straight hair so here it is. You see a lot of lines because this is still rough sketch.
I will delete some lines afterwards…. but I think those sketch lines actually look nice all together.
Sometimes I like to leave them on. Depends on my mood.
Step 3. Lips, Clothes, and cleaning up the sketch lines
Can you see his hair lines are more clean then step 2?
I also enforced outline more.
Adding his clothes. I first thought of putting a Gakuran (Japanese high school uniform) , but I decided to draw casual style – hoodie!
Step 4. Then finally I draw eyes.
I usually draw eyes in early step. There is not set rules when to draw what, it’s totally up to what I feel like!
The tricky part to draw eyes is to draw 2 eyes equally. To me that’s tough. You can add support lines if that helps.
I had to change size several times to get them right size.
Step 5. Finally coloring!
I am doing some experiments and practice about coloring.
Usually I pick very light colors first and paint darker and darker for the shade, like this.
Colors can be rough or perfectly inside the lines…. I choose to be rough this time.
Step 6. Can you see I am adding shades?
I manually color-pick from the skin tone, and choose darker colors.
Know where the light is coming from. In this picture, the light is right in front of him, so I add shade accordingly.
Step 7. Colored his hoodie. and most importantly, I gave “life” to his eyes.
You can go all the details for eye coloring, and over all more painting to him, but I decided to keep this very simple since this is for quick painting, mainly for beginners 🙂
It’s important to know when to stop when you drawing and painting, because oh my gosh, you can spend hours and days …. Painting is a never ending project. 😅
This is my first how-to-draw manga/anime post, did you like it okay?
