Hi! Japanese Illustrator Mom, Koko here.
It’s raining outside, your kids are getting bored. You need to somehow entertain them….
What to do!?
If you have washi tapes, Airplane figures – you can easily make airport at home!
Let me show you how I made it.
Overview – Washi Tape Airport at home
First, please take a look! This is what I made with Z 🙂
We made Airport in our room!
Let’s go detailed look, and some tips and advice for this activity.
Here’s more detailed shoots:
Runways (can you see arrows?)
Next to runways there are gates / parking for airplanes.
Z is making a rescue team area.
Passengers’ parking lot
Tools you need
Washi Tape – Why Washi Tape? I like using Washi Tapes for this activities because they do stick but easy to take off.
Washi Tape doesn’t have to have fancy designs on it.
Airplane Figures – any airplanes figures will do! This one looks pretty cool to play with!
Cars – any cars your kids have!
Ambulance Cars – in case there’s an “accident” at the airport, you may want to prepare ambulance / police cars.
Construction Sign Toys – in case the airport has a area with on-going construction.
How to make Airport Terminal
This is what I made as Airport Terminal.
How I made it? is super simple… I basically used the empty box, upside down!
My husband bought a Virtual Reality Headset.
I just used the plastic box that came with it.
Looks good, right? ✌️
Oh, you may wonder… What’s on top of the terminal?
This is a cool puzzle ball that I bought for Z!
Tip : Use any empty, better if it’s has funky shape box – you can turn it into a cool building!
I also drew us. Now we can travel together!
Build Locations and Create Stories
In this activity —- kids can creates stories.
First they build location with parents. and after that, kids create stories!
Our wooden floor had a small natural hole….. so Z said
“Keep Out! Airport staff is drilling a hole to make another airport under the ground” .
He says the airplane had a problem when it was landing – oh no, there’s fire!!!!
The Rescue Team hurries to the airplane, surrounding it
You and your kids build together:)
This Building-with-Washi Tape requires you and your kids to make together, being creative, and fun!
Ask your kids where he wants to build a parking lot.
Ask, where he wants a runway!
I’ve made one runway but Z wanted add one more, pointing opposite direction. I realized how kids can be detailed….they observe very well! You will be impressed through this play, how creative your kids are!
Other Ideas with this sort of play
Using Washi Tape, you can design any locations and areas such as:
- Shopping mall / parking
- Space Base on the moon (!?)
- Movie Theater
- Camping Site
There are so many ways to play “cheap”, instead of spending a lot of money on toys!
I really hope you enjoy this idea and you’ll try with your kids!
If your kids like to draw, then they should be in my circle!!
